Reflection for Tuesday 5 May 2020

Pastor Suzanne Trump

For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

Ephesians 2:10

Creativity is a quality I value especially when it comes to artistic endeavors. I delight in walking around my neighborhood and looking at all the sidewalk art that is being done to cheer us up. I am convinced that one of my neighbors doing art on her driveway is either a trained or naturally gifted artist. Perhaps it is both. Her work is not only inspiring but strikingly beautiful. I look forward to walking by her house to see what new inspirations she has each day.

I believe that God too is a gifted creator. Just look at what wonderful and complex beings God created in us. Sometimes when I think about the complexity of a human being, I am in awe of God’s ability to put us together not just physically but spiritually and emotionally too. It amazes me the way each intricate body system works within the body to enable us to move, think, learn, and create. I cannot imagine having the creativity to come up with humans. Each of us is a unique work of art and no two of us are exactly alike.

Pastor David Lose noted that this Easter Season we are not just celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we are witnessing the re-creation of human existence itself. As we talk about a “new” normal during and after the pandemic is over, I cannot help but see a strong connection to the Resurrection. As Pastor Lose pointed out, “how do you talk about normal when someone has been raised from the dead? Really, what can be normal after that? Doesn’t that change everything?

We have a unique opportunity to join with God to develop a “new” normal for ourselves, our community, and our world. Let us get creative. How can we make the world a better place? What actions do we need to take to make our community more loving, more just, more accepting? I want this time of quarantine to be more than an exercise in who can stay at home the longest. I want the people that died to have not died in vain. I think these are actions that God is calling us to at this moment in time. We have been gifted with creativity so let us use it and get to work with God in creating a “new” normal.

In Peace, love, and creativity,

Pastor Suzanne
